Safe Routes to School
Safe Routes to School (SRTS) is a nationwide program encouraging safer walking/biking to promote physical activity and decrease health risks associated with automobile traffic.The guiding principles of a successful SRTS initiative are the 5 E’s: Education, Encouragement, Engineering, Enforcement, and Evaluation.
Across Rye, Rye Neck, Larchmont and Mamaroneck, school, city and community members have developed programs to heighten awareness of walking safely to school including:
- Crosswalks Education Campaign
- Safety pledge
- Walking school buses
- Golden Sneaker Award
- Video/PSA contest
- Creation of a Sound Shore SRTS logo
- Distribution of banners and promotional materials
- Walk to School Days/Weeks
- Measurement/evaluation of traffic transportation methods
