Rye Students celebrate Earth Week & Global Youth Service Day
[ April 30, 2010]On April 22-23, children at Midland School celebrated Earth Week and Global Youth Service Day with 
outdoor activities organized by parent Sheri DeGraw. Students grades K-5 prepared their school garden for spring plantings, made pinecone birdfeeders and planted seedlings which were later shared with the Senior Citizens Garden Group at Rye Recreation. Recognizing that a garden can serve as a common place for many age groups to come together, DeGraw collaborated with the seniors to underscore to students that young seedlings may one day grow into mighty oaks. The days’ activities were made possible through a grant awarded by the Rye YMCA with funding received from United Healthcare. Projects such are these are part of the Y’s Activate America initiative to increase physical activity and improve nutritional awareness as a way to influence long term behavior change for a healthier lifestyle.
