Rye Y Story Project

AnnIvan-JillDoornickVoices of the Community: The Rye Y Story Project

In the fall of 2012, in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Rye Y members, staff and volunteers shared their personal stories, from the back stories that brought them to the Y to the successes and challenges encountered on the road to healthy living. It was all part of the Y’s first “Voices from the Community: The Rye Y Story Project.”

Over the course of two days, members sat down with staff interviewers in a “story booth” built out of a large gym mat. Modeled loosely on StoryCorps, a national non-profit oral history project, “The Rye Y Story Project” was launched to further the sense of community that already exists at the Y.

The tradition continues! In the fall of 2016, the Rye Y hosted its fifth annual story project, followed by an exhibit of several dozen member stories.
