Edible School Gardens

The Activate America coalition recognizes that “edible school gardens” is a creative and novel way to encourage both sound nutrition and physical activity to school children.  In June 2009, the Rye Y received a $10,000 grant from the General Mills Champions for Healthy Kids Foundation to fund a pilot garden program at 3 schools (Milton Elementary in Rye, Daniel Warren in Rye Neck ad Mamaroneck Ave. School in Mam’k).

The purpose of the curriculum based garden program is to tie lesson plans to the on-going living laboratory of a garden.  Math, science, social studies and weather can be taught in the interactive setting of a garden.  A ‘How To” guide will be developed outlining lessons learned through the course of the year and will be distributed to interested schools throughout the Sound Shore community.
