Summer Lifeguard and Waterfront Lifeguard Courses

The Y is hosting a summer Lifeguard course on Monday and Wednesday nights, July 10-July 31! In this course, you will learn how to respond to emergency situations in and around the water by learning water rescues, first aid, and CPR. You must attend all of the course dates in order to complete the certification. Please see pre-requisites below.

Monday July 10 6:00-9:30pm
Mondays and Wednesdays July 12, 17, 19, 24, 26, 31 6:00-9:30pm
FEE: Member $400, Non Member $450

•Swim 300 yards (12 laps or 24 back & forth as a continuous swim, no stopping at the side or midway.) Demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing to the side and arms must come out of the water. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.
•Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.
•Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
•Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.
•Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
•Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath. Candidates should not swim the distance under water.
•Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Minimum age of 15
•Swim 550 yards (about 500 meters) continuously
•200 yards front crawl using rhythmic breathing
•200 yards breaststroke using pull breathe, kick, glide
•200 yards front crawl, breaststroke or combination of both starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds
•swim 5 yards, submerge and retrieve three dive rings placed 5 yards apart in 4-7 feet of water, resurface and swim 5 yards to the side of the pool.
